We spend a great deal of effort, in this garden, finding the fastest route.

I want to argue for the other kind. The long way round, by the wall and the border and the soft edge of the lawn, is not efficient. But you see more of it. You meet more neighbors. You find the patch of clover nobody else knows about.

Speed has its place. If a bird is circling, take the shortcut. But most days, nothing is circling, and the far side of the garden will still be there when you arrive.

Arrive a little late. You’ll have more to say when you get there.
